The primary benefits of cushions adapted for prolonged sitting are improved comfort and posture for patients with limited mobility and the prevention of pressure ulcers and bedsores in these patients. Not all chairs are designed to allow for comfortable prolonged sitting or to help maintain proper posture. Various health problems can result from maintaining poor posture over the long term: spinal deformity, joint contractures, discomfort, etc. The risk of a patient with reduced mobility developing such a problem is reduced by adding a gel or viscoelastic foam positioning cushion to the seat of their chair. Positioning cushions help patients adopt and maintain an ergonomic position when sitting for long periods. In addition to providing increased postural support, cushions suitable for prolonged sitting are also designed to dissipate heat and better distribute pressure on the buttock bones. The ischium, the bones in the pelvis that support much of the upper body\u2019s weight when sitting, is a bony area at risk for pressure ulcer development.
